The verdict

A hammam east of the centre where each route starts in the Turkish bath: black soap, a scrub, a foam massage and a whirlpool, two hours for €90.

Give it the afternoon

Every route begins in the Turkish bath. The Giulio Cesare adds a Himalayan salt scrub, a clay mask and a 30-minute almond-oil massage: two and a half hours for €150.

Guests say you move from room to room without meeting anyone else, then rest with fruit and herbal tea. The longest route, the Marco Aurelio, runs 3h45 for €300.

Why this one

Thalea near Termini, 4.4 km north-west, has a pool, a jacuzzi and a sauna, rated 4.9 from 94 reviews, but no published prices.

Templum Salutis is the one for the hammam itself: a fixed route of bath, soap and massage, at a price on its own site.

What guests notice

“Do yourself a favor and register for the longest hammam route you can.”

Ryan Sullivan, Google review

“Do not be put off from the outside, the area is a bit rough and it doesn't look inviting but once through the door it is amazing!”

Lilly Holford, Google review
