The verdict
A hotel spa with the whole set under one roof: a bathhouse, sauna, steam room, indoor pool and Watsu pool, and a three-hour day pass for 18,000 yen.
Order the Omakase
Omakase means 'I'll leave it up to you'. You start with a Japanese bathing ritual, the therapist builds the treatment around your time and the season, and it ends with herbal tea.
Before that, mix your own scrub at the Alchemy Bar. The ingredients change with Japan's 24 micro-seasons, from Risshun in early February to Daikan the following January.
Why this one
Banyan Tree Higashiyama, 1.2 km away, has something Six Senses doesn't: natural hot-spring water in private hinoki tubs, plus steam saunas and morning yoga over a Japanese garden. It publishes no prices.
Six Senses has the full set: pool, bathhouse and sauna, a tea lounge, and a day pass open to visitors.
