The verdict
An old-fashioned neighbourhood sento 400 m from To-ji: two hot baths, an electric bath, a cold plunge, and owners who hand you a guide in English.
After the pagoda
It opens at four in the afternoon, so see To-ji first; the five-storey pagoda is 400 m away. Pay at the counter, undress, wash at the taps.
Then the baths, hot and cold, and the electric bath if you're curious. There's a small seating area outside by the river for cooling down.
Why this one
Nothing else around Kyoto Station passed our rules: the best-rated places there are massage, beauty and head-spa salons.
Hinode-yu is the opposite: no treatments, just the city's bathing habit, in an old building that one guest dates to the Showa era.
What guests notice
“The only place that offered a laminated instruction book in english.”
Dalilah Medina, Google review
“Feels like out of time, in an interesting way.”

You need privacy or a swimsuit: this is a traditional bath, naked and shared, men and women separate. For a private sauna, MACHIYA:SAUNA is 3 km north.
