The verdict

A 160-year-old townhouse, once a painter's studio, rented whole for three hours: private sauna, a cypress cold bath facing the garden, from 8,000 yen each.

Take the evening session

There are four three-hour sessions a day; the last runs from 19:30 to 22:30. Pour your own löyly from a choice of aromas, then step into the hinoki cold bath, chilled and half open to the garden.

Rest on the engawa over the small courtyard garden, or in the tatami room in a rocking chair. The painter Kobayashi Uko worked here; Akutagawa and Tanizaki were among his friends.

Why this one

sayoka in Kamigyo, 2.7 km north-west, is the other private sauna to book, with an open-air rest area and a perfect 5.0 from 557 reviews. Its sessions of two hours and twenty minutes start at 15,400 yen.

The difference is the house: 160 years old, a garden, and a chilled cold bath, which sayoka's site doesn't confirm.
