The verdict

A small hammam on a Pera side street that runs like a good hotel: book on WhatsApp, and packages from €70 include sauna and steam.

Go before dinner

Walk down İstiklal in the late afternoon and turn into Asmalı Mescit before the crowd at Tünel. Ten minutes later you're on warm marble with a clay mask drying on your face.

You come out as the meyhanes of Asmalı Mescit are setting their tables. Dinner is a few doors away; you'll be the most relaxed person in the room.

Why this one

Tarihi Çeşme Hamamı 1720, 780 metres away, scores the same and is better loved: 2,303 reviews against 173. It sits 1.84 km from our peninsula pick, inside our 2 km rule, so Pera takes this part of town.

Kılıç Ali Paşa, a sixteenth-century Sinan dome 700 metres downhill, is the more beautiful building, but offers the hammam and little else. Pera gives a first-timer everything in one booking, with a price list you can read before you go.

“I booked the €70 package via WhatsApp, which included a 30-minute massage, 10-minute face clay mask, sauna, steaming room, and finishing with an amazing scrub hamam.”
