Tokyo: a neighbourhood sento and five private saunas with their own cold baths

Tokyo's own bath is the sento, the neighbourhood bathhouse you pay for at the door. Men and women bathe in separate halls, wash first, then share a large hot bath, often under a tiled mural of Mount Fuji. Their numbers have fallen since the second half of the 20th century, as more homes gained baths.

The big ones mostly sit under our rating line: Spa LaQua at 4.0, Thermae-Yu at 4.1, Mikokuyu at 4.3 and Kotobuki Yu at 4.4. Haginoyu passes on volume, with 5,391 reviews, and carries our Ritual tag. The rest of the list is private saunas rented by the room, each with its own cold bath.

The six sit at least 2 km apart. Ikebukuro and Odaiba have no pick: we found no day sale for hotel hisoca's saunas, and Odaiba's one candidate is a foot bath.
