The verdict
The last bathhouse Copenhagen built, from 1917, now run by a volunteer association: private tub baths, a sauna, a cold tub and guided saunagus on set days.
Book a saunagus
A saunagus session lasts an hour: three rounds of 9 to 14 minutes, with breaks to cool off in the cold tub and the showers. Only 17 tickets are sold per session, and from October to March they often sell out.
On ordinary bath days, take a private tub, then the sauna. Guests help run the house: refill the water jugs when they are empty, and clean your own tub after use.
Why this one
Nothing else in Nørrebro and Østerbro passed our rules. Sjællandsgade Bad scores 8, the highest in Copenhagen: the bath tradition itself, a sauna, a cold tub, a 1917 building and a saunagus programme.
It carries our Ritual tag because it is the city's own kind of bath: until 2010 it was a municipal bathhouse, where bath attendants scrubbed bathers with wood wool. It earns no point for prices; its price page returned an error.

Skip it if
You want long or flexible hours: the bath opens four days a week, a few hours at a time. Plugin Heat Club in Sydhavn, 3.9 km south, is open daily from 07:00.
The menu
sjaellandsgadebad.dk lists bath, sauna and saunagus, but its prices page returned an error (404) on 7 November 2026. Tickets are booked on the website.
Before you go
Wednesday 15:00 to 21:00, Friday 16:00 to 19:00, Saturday 09:00 to 15:00, Sunday 17:00 to 20:00; closed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (Google). Swimwear is optional, and towels are not rented: bring your own, plus a large one to sit on in the sauna. One of the saunas was being renovated in October 2026, so check the website first.
