The verdict
A Japanese spa in a converted Bukit Timah shophouse since 2009: a hinoki onsen bath with salts from Japan, from $100, then shiatsu or a facial, and a zen garden.
Onsen first, then shiatsu
The hinoki onsen bath costs from $100 alone and from $140 for a couple. A therapist guides first-timers through it: rinse, soak for about 10 minutes, then rinse again.
Then a massage or a facial in one of ten treatment rooms. The zen garden covers 3,000 square feet.
Why this one
Nothing else in Bukit Timah passed our rules. Ikeda scores 7: a 4.7 from 721 reviews, the onsen bath, the massage, the garden and prices on its own site.
It carries no Ritual tag: the onsen is Japan's tradition, not Singapore's.

You want a sauna or a cold plunge: the heat here is a private onsen tub. Nowhere Baths, 3.2 km south-east, has both.
