London's places to sweat: six picks, and three of them are sauna clubs

London once invented a bath of its own: the Victorian Turkish bath, with dry hot air, a wash and a cold plunge. Two survive, Porchester Spa and Ironmonger Row, but both sit under our rating line, at 3.8 and 4.2.

What passed is newer: three sauna-and-ice clubs, a Russian banya and two hammams in the west. The six sit at least 1.5 km apart. South Bank and Kensington are empty, and AIRE in Covent Garden lost Mayfair to Park Lane Wellness.
