The verdict
Built in 1928, the last wood-heated neighbourhood sauna in Helsinki: men's and women's public saunas, a washer on Thursdays and Saturdays, €16 to stay as long as you like.
Come on a Thursday or a Saturday
The men's sauna is on the ground floor and the women's on the floor above. No booking is needed, and you may bathe as long as you like; on Thursdays and Saturdays a washer gives a full-body wash for €15.
Rent a towel and buy a birch whisk at the till. Then cool off out front with a drink, watching the Kallio street.
Why this one
Nothing else in Kallio passed our rules. Kulttuurisauna in Hakaniemi, the nearest rival, lies 990 metres away, inside our 1 km limit.
Kotiharju scores 7: a 4.7 from 885 reviews, the sauna, the wash, a 1928 building and its prices on its own site. It carries our Ritual tag as the city's own kind of bath, a public neighbourhood sauna.

You want a sea dip or a late evening: there is no sea here, and the saunas close at 20:00. Sompasauna, 2.4 km east, is by the water and open around the clock.
