Helsinki: three public saunas, from a 1928 neighbourhood sauna to a free one by the sea

Helsinki's bath is the sauna, and it is often a public one. Finnish sauna culture joined UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in December 2020; the word itself is Finnish, and the steam from water thrown on the stones is called löyly. All three picks belong to that tradition, so all three carry our Ritual tag.

The three sit at least 1 km apart. They are a wood-fired neighbourhood sauna from 1928 in Kallio, a free, volunteer-run sauna on the shore in Kalasatama, and a smoke sauna with a restaurant in Hernesaari. Kulttuurisauna in Hakaniemi lies 990 metres from Kotiharju, inside our distance limit, and Allas Sea Pool sits under our rating line at 4.2.
